Mount Batur is a small stratovolcano located in Bangli District, in the north-central island of Bali. Mount Batur has a height of 1.717 meters and has several craters. It is situated in a large caldera, which shows a remnant of a massive eruption in prehistoric times from a volcano that once had a height of more than 4,000 meters. The term “Batur” often refers to the entire caldera, including Abang Mountain, the third highest peak in Bali located along its periphery.
Mount Batur caldera is also part of the Global Geoparks Network, given by UNESCO in 2012. The network was aimed to promote and conserve Mount Batur as one of the planet’s geological heritage and encourages the sustainable research and development by the communities in Bali.
Mount Batur Bali Indonesia remains active to this day and has been recorded erupting more than 20 times in the last two centuries. Major eruptions occurred in 1917, 1926 and 1963 (the same year as the great eruption of Mount Agung), making Mount Batur as the most active volcano on the island of Bali Indonesia.
