Tegenungan Waterfall Bali – A Hidden Beauty in Ubud

Tegenungan Waterfall Bali is one of hidden gem that cannot be missed in Ubud, Bali. It is around 10 km away or 10 minutes driving from Ubud city center. It is a perfect choice for people who want to seek some peace while playing in the water at the same time.

The waterfall is located in Tegenungan Kemenuh city, District Sukawati, Gianyar, Bali. Although it is quite a famous place to visit in Bali, yet the waterfall is still quite hidden away from the festivity.

Tegenungan waterfall is one of the waterfalls in Bali that is not located in a mountainous area or the northern part of Bali. The height of the waterfall is only 25 meters water cascade. The water that runs off from the waterfall is still clean and clear. The surrounding area is enclosed with greenery will surely give you a soothing and comfort ambiance.

Tegenungan waterfall is a perfect place for a family vacation during the holiday where kids can play around in the water and enjoy a dip in the plunge pool safely. However, the waterfall is quite powerful, and some warning signs need to be paid attention off by the visitors in case of a downpour.

You may be able to go upstairs to the cliff by passing through a wooden bridge or just enjoy the waterfall from below.  Some Balinese men near the fall provide lounge chairs that you can rent to enjoy the waterfall. However, it is best to get wet in the fall. If you happen to be a strong swimmer, try to swim behind the waterfalls, which is super cool!

To reach the location, you need to walk for several minutes down the trail to get to the waterfall. After descending the stairs, the path will split at one point, the right path will take you to a temple and the left one down to the waterfall. The green valley scenery with cascading water as its centerpiece is an impressive view that is awaited once you arrive at the location.

Enjoy the surrounding calmness and don’t forget to take some pictures from the height to get a breathtaking view.

Upon arrival, the travelers who use private car have to pay Rp5,000.00 for the parking ticket. While it is free for motorbikes. For adults, the entrance fee to Tegenungan waterfall is around Rp15,000.00. The location is open from 06:30 to 18:00.

Apart from enjoying the waterfall, you may stroll around the area as there are art and souvenir shops available near the ticket booths, as well as some food stalls that sell snacks and cold drinks for the visitors.

When the meal time arrive, there is a large restaurant around the location which is called Bebek Tamarind that you must visit. The restaurant serves its delicious signature dish, Balinese crispy duck, the one that cannot be missed when trying to explore Balinese culinary. The restaurant is a fantastic place to hang out with family and friends before or after spending the day at Tegenungan Waterfall. So, don’t forget to ask all your family to come along!

How to Go to Tegenungan Waterfall

Tegenungan waterfall is 1 hour away by car from Kuta and central Canggu. From Denpasar, you have to go by car for 30 minutes. It is located halfway between Ubud and Denpasar. Once arriving in the area, a sign saying “Tegenungan waterfall” and a pointing arrow will direct you to the exact location.

You can rent a car or a motorbike to get to the location. You can easily spot the location by following Google Maps. It is a cheaper way to get to the location other than paying for a taxi. A taxi can be quite expensive but grabbing a taxi or hiring a private driver will allow you to explore some other places nearby as well, such as Dusun Kuning and Kanto Lampo.

Travel Tips

  • Some days, the location can be crowded. Thus, it is best to come to Tegenungan waterfall early in the morning to avoid the crowd. Head to the location before lunch and climb back up the stairs to enjoy lunch with the view of the falls.
  • Jumping off from the cliff is not recommended as the water pool is not deep enough.
  • Parents must keep children in the safe zone when playing water.
  • It is best to come during the dry season (April to September) as there is a risk of downpours which causes flash floods in the rainy season in the waterfall.
